Preparations for Zambia’s 2026 General Elections Begin

By Ennety Munshya,

Preparations for Zambia’s 2026 General Elections have officially commenced, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announced on Monday, January 13, 2024.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro revealed that the Commission has awarded the contract for printing and delivering ballot papers and other election materials to Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing of the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier, Mr. Kasaro explained that the Commission initially intended to award the contract to Ren-Form CC of South Africa, the first-ranked bidder. However, the decision was reversed, prompting ECZ to re-issue the tender on May 26, 2024.

The new tender invited both local and international bidders who met the eligibility requirements. By the close of the process, the ECZ received seven bids: six from international companies and one from a local bidder.

The awarded contract covers the production and delivery of key electoral materials, including ballot papers, ballot paper posters, blind voter templates, voter registers, announcement forms, and voter lists.

By-Elections Update

In addition to the roadmap for the 2026 General Elections, the ECZ announced the schedule for upcoming by-elections. The polls are set for February 6, 2025, in the following areas:

  • Pambashe Constituency, Kawambwa District, Luapula Province
  • Petauke Constituency, Petauke District, Eastern Province
  • Ntanda Ward, Mpongwe District, Copperbelt Province
  • Litawa Ward, Mongu District, Western Province

Zambia holds general elections every five years, as stipulated by the Constitution. During these elections, citizens vote for the President, Members of Parliament, Mayors, and Councilors. The most recent general election, held in 2021, was highly competitive, with the United Party for National Development (UPND) defeating its closest rival, the Patriotic Front (PF).
