MakanDay Centre for Investigative Journalism proudly participated in the 2024 Zambia Anti-Corruption Conference (ZACC), hosted by Transparency International Zambia, held on October 26-27 in Kitwe.
As part of a panel discussion on Corruption in Extractives: Addressing Human Rights Violations and Environmental Impacts, MakanDay showcased a critical but overlooked case involving over 30 former employees of Southern Africa Ferro Alloys Limited (SAFAL) suffering from manganese poisoning. This ongoing human rights issue has been largely ignored by both the government and the international community. Despite the gravity of the situation, the processing plant in Serenje remains operational and continues to employ other workers.
The conference, themed “Collaborative Partnerships for Combating Corruption in Extractive Industries,” gathered high-level delegates from across Zambia and beyond. Discussions focused on the pervasive corruption in Zambia’s extractive industries and its implications amid the global energy transition.
MakanDay remains committed to exposing corruption and amplifying the voices of vulnerable communities affected by unethical practices in extractive industries.
