A CWAC official has confirmed collecting residents’ NRCs and voter cards in Chasefu District, as allegations emerge of similar activity ahead of Zambia’s general election. But who authorised the collection — and why?

With Zambians heading to the polls, MakanDay examines allegations that residents in parts of Eastern Province were asked to surrender their National Registration Cards and voter cards.
In Chasefu, some residents allege the collection was linked to promises of inclusion on the Social Cash Transfer programme.
MakanDay has not independently established that the exercise was authorised by the UPND or that surrendering documents was genuinely connected to the programme.
However, Chaboli Ward CWAC Chairperson William Mushanga confirmed collecting NRCs and voter cards, saying they were held for two days to establish the number of people in the ward.
Zambian electoral law prohibits possession of another person’s voter card or NRC during the campaign period and also prohibits inducing someone to surrender the documents.
