Unrelenting Cancer Crisis in Zambia

Zambia, with only one cancer diseases hospital, has been struggling to provide treatment for its cancer patients, the Cancer diseases hospital located at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka is the only facility, which is able to treat cancer patients, however investigations have revealed that it has not been able to provide treatment such as radiotherapy since December 2022 due to the broken down radiation machines.

According to the World Health Organization WHO Zambia has the third highest burden of cervical cancer in the world, despite being a preventable and treatable disease.

In March 2024 Former Health Minister Silvia Masebo disclosed that government will continue sending cancer patients for treatment such as radiotherapy to India due to the condition of the machines at the Cancer diseases hospital.

And according to the latest statistics by the global can 2022 in Zambia, 3,640 women translating to 41 percent are diagnosed with cervical cancer out of which 2,285 representing 23.4 percent die every year, a number which is more than half of those diagnosed die of cervical cancer, symbolising the severity of the disease in the country.
