“Looking at the illegal sale of ARVs, I am looking at myself.” — Duba Sakala

Behind every diverted ARV bottle is a real person, a real patient, and a real risk.

Following our investigation into the illegal diversion and sale of life-saving HIV medication in mining communities, health officials, regulators, advocates, and students came together to confront what experts described as a growing health security threat.

These are not ordinary commodities.

They are life-saving medicines.

According to health officials and regulatory experts, when ARVs are sold on the street, the consequences can be severe: treatment failure becomes more likely, drug resistance increases, and Zambia’s hard-earned gains in the fight against HIV are placed at serious risk.

Exposure is only the first step. Accountability must follow.
